Northern Bahr El Gazal State has detained six suspects for investigation following mysterious death of a couple.
A man and his wife, were found hanging in a local pub at Hai Zalala neighborhood of Aweil town, on Wednesday night.
Police Commissioner, Thomas Wani revealed that the suspects were apprehended at the pub where the bodies of the couple were discovered.
“We were tipped off about the death of a couple, as they were found hanged with their own clothes. We are holding these six suspects as they reside with the couple in the same pub as we don’t know yet what made the couple die mysteriously as such,” said Wani.
“They are neighbours and these are all women whom we apprehended,” he noted.
Chief Deng Bol reported that the male victim was found hanging by his clothes, while the female victim was discovered with her knees nearly touching the ground.
He said the incident appears to be linked to excessive drinking, as the couples lived in the pub and often slept there.
“As residents of Hai-Zalaala, we are dismayed at what happened as people have resorted to sleep in the pub and avoid going back to their homes of origin and decide to reside in the pub. As a matter of fact we need to ascertain whether they were killed or overdrinking caused their death,” said Bol.
He questioned the circumstances of their deaths, noting, it is troubling that both individuals were found hanging with their clothes tied around their necks.
The chief issued a warning about the dangers of excessive drinking and living in local pubs, where such tragedies can occur.
As investigations continue, the community in Aweil town remains abuzz with speculation about the events leading to the couple’s deaths, following a heavy police presence in the Hai Zalala neighborhood to apprehend the suspects.
The results of the post-mortem examination are awaited to shed light on the cause of death.
