South Sudan’s Media Authority has expressed concern over misuse of social media platforms in the country, citing elements of misinformation and disinformation that cause panic among the public.
Social media, while a powerful tool for connection and expression, the regulatory said, has become a double-edged sword transforming from a simple communication medium into a potential vehicle for hate speech, propaganda, misinformation and disinformation in South Sudan.
“The spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms has caused waves of unnecessary panic and fear among our people,” read the statement.
Media Authority emphasized that this harmful practice must be discouraged through the collective responsibilities of every citizen.
It called on political leaders, religious figures, and civil society groups to verify information and use social media responsibly to unite rather than to divide and avoid political statements that could incite violence.
The regulatory body urged all citizens to rely on legally recognized media houses in South Sudan for credible information.
Media houses are also encouraged to continue with their diligent work in verifying information before publication.
Recently, social media was buzzed with rumours alleging that President Salva Kiir is planning to relinquish power to the SPLM’s First Deputy Secretary-General for Political Mobilization and Organization who also doubles as Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel.
This rumour was later refuted as false and detrimental by the SPLM Secretariat.
Media Authority advises the government to ensure timely dissemination of authentic, credible information to prevent the spread of misinformation.
