Deadly road ambush leaves ex-minister, 2 others injured in Pochalla

Three people have been injured in a road ambush by an armed youth group in Pochalla County on Thursday, evening.

Police and local officials identified the attack victims as Dr. David Philip Omot, a former Health minister for Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), Ahol Bilnyang and Omot Athawa.

Pochalla County police inspector, Col. Amati Ochan told No.1 Citizen Daily Newspaper that the three came under fire on returning after delivering medical supplies to Burator.

“In the morning, the vehicle left Pochalla town for Burator to deliver medical supplies. It was on its return that it was attacked between Nyium and Pochalla town,” he said.

According to the police officer, the former health minister, now an aid worker was injured on the head, while Athawa sustained serious gunshot wounds.

The police inspector, who condemned the attack, revealed that no suspect has been arrested in regard to the incidence, though witnesses claim they hail from the neighbouring county.

“According to eyewitness, the attackers are said to be our neighbor from Pibor County. Those are just criminals loitering in bushes. So, no arrest was made,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pochalla county executive director, Owety Olung said plans are underway to fly those injured to Juba for adequate medical attention.

“Arrangements are being made for them to be flown to Juba for more treatment,” he said.

When contacted, Greater Pibor Administrative Area information minister, Abraham Kelang said they were not aware of the incident.
