Over 100 patients get free eye surgery

By Yien Gattuor

At least one hundred and five (105) individuals have undergone free eye surgeries at Ruweng Administrative Area Hospital.

The free eye camp commenced on June 28th and concluded on June 29th.

The Tuach Riek Gai Foundation organized the surgeries with support from the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) oil consortium Company.

Benjamin Munybang, Ruweng Hospital administrator, told No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper on Wednesday that the health camp focused on treating patients with trachoma and cataracts.

“The patients from various parts of the Ruweng Administrative Area, including seven counties, received treatment for cataracts and trachoma.”

Benjamin said they are happy with the free eye treatment camp taken to Ruweng.

“The Ruweng Administrative Community didn’t turn up in big numbers here, and today is finally the day for free eye surgeries,” he noted.

The hospital administrator commended the initiative as a relief and appealed for the extension of the eye camp.

The weeklong operation brought joy to the people of Ruweng.

Benjamin added that “the Ruweng Administrative Area is grateful to those doctors and hopes they will continue organizing such camps, as there is significant number of people with eye-related issues here.”

Nyakuong Diu, one of the patients who benefited from the free eye treatment, expressed his joy about the camp.

“Two of my eyes were operated on. I am among those who received surgeries. We have now regained our sight. We are delighted with the success of the free eye camp,” he said.

“I urged the government of Ruweng Administrative to continue bringing more organizations that can do the same things to our community that has lost sight of things in life,” Diu said.

Meanwhile, Stephen Mai Gatkuoth, project coordinator at Tuach Riek Gai Foundation, said about 500 individuals were supposed to be operated but only 105 patients turned up.

Gatkuoth disclosed that plans are underway within this month for them to also provide similar eye treatment camp services to Unity State and Bentiu Town.
