By Manas James

Jonglei State Police said they are holding a man who opened fire on his in-laws and injured seven at a market in the state capital, Bor.

The seven survivors of the gunshots are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Bor and others in Juba.

They were sitting at a shop in Marol, the main market of Bor town on Thursday evening when attacked by their in-law.

Jonglei state police commissioner, Major-General Elia Costa Faustino said the suspect was arrested and detained for investigation while pending prosecution in court.

“We dispatched our officers to the crime scene immediately on that fateful evening and arrested the man involved in the shooting,” the police spokesperson said.

He added that the gun used in committing the crime is also under police custody.

“According to preliminary investigations, the suspect was infuriated over some issues in his daughter’s marriage,” Costa said.

He added five of the injured, whose conditions were serious, have been transferred to Juba for further medication.

“We are waiting for medical reports and statements from the injured before we could forward the case to the court,” the police officer explained.

The police chief called for calm among the relatives of the wounded men as the law takes its course.
