Adeng assumes role as representative to UN

South Sudan’s Ambassador, Cecilia A.M. Adeng on Monday assumed a role as Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Adeng, who has become the country’s first female representative to UN presented her credentials to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

South Sudan Women Intellectuals’ Forum, in a statement described Adeng as an experienced diplomat with a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to advancing the interests of South Sudan within the United Nations framework.

Ambassador Adeng replaces Mr. Akuei Bona Malual, after the extension of the UN arms embargo on South Sudan.

Adeng’s appointment as Permanent Representative, positions her as a key figure in fostering dialogue, promoting cooperation, and addressing global challenges.

Ambassador Adeng’s appointment highlights the importance South Sudan places on engaging with the international community.

According to the statement; Adeng expressed South Sudan’s dedication to positively contributing to global affairs and upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.

To the UN, she is obliged to represent South Sudan’s interests, participate in committees and forums, and engage in diplomatic negotiations on pressing global issues.

“Her tenure has got her in active involvement in discussions related to peace and security, development, human rights, and other critical matters that affect South Sudan and the wider world,” the statement reiterated.
