By Charles K. Mark

President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), Dennis Francis, is on an official visit to Juba this week.

The visit aims to further strengthen and foster cooperation between the Republic of South Sudan and the United Nations.

According to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the visit is intended to demonstrate Francis’ full support for ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, security, and development in the country.

“Mr. Francis will express the United Nations’ support for the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, commend regional efforts in this regard, and call for its full implementation,” UNMISS said in a statement.

During his visit, the PGA president will meet President Salva Kiir Mayardit, and meet with Ramadan Abdallah Goc, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as other Cabinet Ministers.

“President Francis will also hold meetings with senior leaders from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, women peacekeepers, and the UN Country team to express his support, and that of the General Assembly, for the work of the peacekeeping mission and the wider UN family,” the statement further read.

The visiting PGA president is also set to hold discussions with children, university students, civil society, and displaced families during his stay in South Sudan.
