The director of Bor Central Prison has been suspended following a daring prison break that saw at least four inmates forcefully freed by armed assailants in the Tibeek suburb on Saturday.

Eyewitness Nyok Malet, reporting via a WhatsApp group, stated that members of the Hol section of Duk County were responsible for the breach. “Haals broke out their jelled people (4) in Tibek maximum prison,” Malet posted.

Gen. Bol Adoor, the chief of Prison Service in Jonglei state, confirmed that he has suspended Gen. Achiek Mach director of Bor Central Prison, and cited an ongoing administrative investigation into the incident.

“Yes, the [director] is suspended and I am down investigating to establish what had happened,” Adoor said in a statement.

Gen. Achiek Mach confirmed his suspension but declined to comment further. “I am no longer at work… I am in my house,” Mach stated.

Authorities have yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the breach or the identity of the armed individuals responsible for the prison break.

Residents in Bor expressed shock over the incident, highlighting fears about public safety and the ability of authorities to maintain law and order.
