IGAD trains Bor entrepreneurs on sustainable fishing

By Kei Emmanuel Duku

Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) equips communities in Bor with skills in crafting sustainable fishing gear.

The initiative, under the IGAD-Ecofish project, seeks to bolster the South Sudanese fisheries sector.

Monofilament gillnets, a common but harmful fishing gear, have been depleting aquatic life in the region.

IGAD highlighted the challenges faced by Jonglei State’s fishing communities due to the lack of proper equipment, which has led to the overuse of these destructive nets.

“South Sudan boasts abundant fisheries, particularly on the River Nile and other water bodies, which offers significant potential for the livelihood of the local communities,” stated an IGAD social media post.

“However, these have been impacted by the absence of better fishing gear.”

The workshop empowered women and youth with the skills to create sustainable multifilament gill nets.

The trained participants are expected to champion the use of environmentally friendly fishing practices and raise awareness about the harmful effects of monofilament nets within their communities.
