Yei commissioner urges youth to avoid gang activities

By James Innocent

Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme has called on the youth of Yei to avoid gang activities and instead focus on sports and community development.

He expressed his commitment to supporting local football and music associations as positive alternatives.

Commissioner Seme urged young people to understand the challenges they face and to develop clear solutions for a better future.

Addressing the need for funding public services, he highlighted the essential role of taxes in maintaining government functions.

“Without taxes, there can be no government,” he stated, urging business owners to engage amicably with tax collectors to support necessary social services.

The commissioner also acknowledged the significance of nightclubs as venues for entertainment but cautioned that recent gang activity in Yei has led to misunderstandings between entertainment providers and the government.

He called for peace and urged the community to renounce violence, abductions, and road ambushes.

In a related statement, the Executive Director of Yei River County echoed Commissioner Seme’s concerns, stating, “Many young people are engaging in gang activities in Juba. I urge you to distance yourselves from these criminal behaviors, especially during nighttime events. We must address the serious issues of rape and looting, as these actions affect our society and governance.”
