South Sudan on Wednesday abstained from the UN General Assembly vote condemning Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories.
The resolution, which passed with overwhelming support, called on Israel to withdraw from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
While many countries in the East African region voted in favor of the resolution, South Sudan, along with Kenya, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda abstained.
Uganda, Tanzania, Djibouti, Burundi, and Mauritius are among the other 12 countries that voted in favor of the resolution and about 124 voted against Israel’s aggression invasion of Palestinian territories.
The UN General Assembly resolution condemned Israel’s illegal annexation of Palestinian territories and its violations of international humanitarian law and human rights.
The assembly also held Israel accountable for the damage caused by its aggression and called for reparations to be paid to the affected population.
The resolution reaffirmed the two-state solution as the only viable path to peace in the Middle East.
The General Assembly called on all states to support Palestinian self-determination and urged the UN Secretary-General to submit a report on the implementation of the resolution.
