The Chairperson of the Acholi Community in South Sudan has called for unity between the Acholi people of Uganda and South Sudan, citing their shared heritage and origins.
This plea comes in the wake of land conflicts that arose last year between Acholi communities in both countries.
In an interview, Mr. Otim David Okot revealed that there will be an upcoming Acholi conference, which aims to bring together elders, chiefs, and other stakeholders from both countries to foster unity.
Otim noted that the Acholi districts of Lamwo and Kitgum are generally peaceful, despite some disturbances caused by outside influences.
He advocates for resolving issues amicably, allowing the Acholi people of South Sudan and Uganda to coexist harmoniously.
“We are one people, speaking the same language and sharing cultural norms. We must focus on understanding one another and move beyond the divisions often perpetuated by our elders and politicians. Our intermarriages and family ties across borders highlight our unity,” Otim stated.
He also pointed out that some communities near the border, such as Pogee, Pajok, and Owiny Kibul, have been selling or renting land to Ugandans for approximately 1 million per hectare.
This has led to tensions, often involving the Ugandan People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and the South Sudsnese.
Otim criticized this practice, calling for clear agreements and documentation to prevent disputes that could escalate.
He emphasized that Ugandans living in Acholi South Sudan should report any land-related conflicts to the local chiefs, rather than involving UPDF soldiers, to ensure proper resolution.
Otim called on the Acholi people from both South Sudan and Uganda to unite, reminding them of their common origins and shared identity.
