Panyikwara Community purchases Canoe to facilitate crossing Atepi River

By Ijoo Bosco

Panyikwara community in Eastern Equatoria State has raised funds to purchase a canoe to ease crossing Atepi River for residents of Owiny Kibul Payam.

The initiative will enhance access to essential social services and farming opportunities on both sides of the river.

The decision to buy the canoe arose after heavy rains damaged the Atepi Bridge, isolating the community.

In a phone interview, Mr. Angelo Oringa Mark, Chairperson of the Panyikwara community, expressed the group’s commitment to improving the lives of their members in Owiny Kibul.

“We recognized the need for a solution that would help our community members cross the river safely,” he stated.

The canoe, capable of carrying 10 people per trip, was transported to Owiny Kibul on Monday to begin operations.

Oringa noted that fundraising efforts are ongoing to acquire an engine for the canoe, which will further enhance its efficiency.

“I urge everyone in the payam and beyond to contribute, whether in cash or kind. I am grateful to our community for their support in raising funds to purchase this canoe and engine. Together, we can assist not only Panyikwara but also our neighboring communities,” Oringa added.

The committee opted for a locally made canoe, planning to add an engine later, as modern boats can cost between $4,500 and $15,000, which is prohibitively expensive.

Oringa mentioned that the canoe will be operated by three local individuals experienced in such operations.

He also called on the Acholi community to develop strategies for self-help rather than relying solely on government assistance.
