Fourteen candidates in Magwi expelled over unauthorized outings

By Ijoo Bosco

Magwi Senior Secondary School administration expelled fourteen Senior Four students on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, due to what they termed “unauthorized outings.”

The students have been instructed to return only during examination periods.

Deputy Head Teacher Mr. Ocido James, who oversees disciplinary matters, explained that the students had exhibited a pattern of indiscipline by frequently leaving the school premises without permission, despite being in the boarding section.

He noted that all Senior Four students were mandated to stay on boarding, unlike their younger peers who can choose to leave at will.

Mr. James confirmed that eleven of the students were sent home on Wednesday, while three were dismissed the previous day, all for similar infractions.

The group consists of nine males and five females. Mr. James indicated that incidents of unauthorized outings had become increasingly common, prompting school officials to engage with Senior Four students to establish a more stringent resolution.

“We have not expelled these learners arbitrarily; this decision is based on the resolution we reached with them earlier,” Mr. Ocido stated, addressing concerns about how the dismissals might affect the student’s performance in the upcoming examinations.

He emphasized that the responsibility lies with the students, not the school, and expressed hope that this incident would serve as a lesson for others.

Mr. Ocido urged parents to remain calm during this period.

As of now, Number One Citizen Daily Newspaper is yet to get comments from the parents of the dismissed students and education officials regarding what the Magwi SS administration describes as dismissals made by established guidelines for schools in the country.
