Leadership wrangle hits USAP

By William Madouk

United Sudan African Party (USAP) is embroiled in a leadership wrangle, with a faction of the party’s central executive committee claiming to have ousted the Acting Chairperson, Joseph Malek Arop.

A group of the Green Party (USAP), publicly announced the removal of Mr. Malek, in a pressing briefing, citing a violation of the party’s policies.

“Hon. Joseph Malek, the acting chairperson and his deputy Hon. John Deng Obany and also the secretary general Hon. Joseph Ojukwu Ikarai is no longer acting leadership of the United Sudan African Party,” Rizik Kames Simon said on behalf of the dissenting group.

The group claimed the ousted chair assumed leadership without a general convention, which he promised to convene within 30 days but to no avail, to date.

Mounting several claims against Mr. Malek, the dissident group also labeled their leader of supporting behaviors that brought disrepute and manifested a blatant violation of the party’s integrity.

“He behaves in such a way to provoke serious divisions or a breakdown of unity of the party,” he added.

“He is supporting a political party other than those in alliance with the party in a manner contrary to the aims, objective, and policy of the party,” Simon continued.

Other accusations are that the USAP Chairperson appointed his relatives and friends to the national parliament and the council of states and government positions without consultation.

“Joseph Malek does not tolerate criticisms, he takes any criticism for enmity that is a sign of weakness and therefore for the poor leadership,” the group noted.

The disgruntled group announced that the ousted secretary general, Mr. Joseph Ojukwu Ikarai, would carry out the tasks for the extraordinary convention, noting that he holds the party’s records.

“With the Central Executive Committee to prepare the extraordinary convention and after the election, he will hand over the task to the new leadership,” Simon explained.

He also stated that all the party structures at the state level will remain in place until the convention.

To him, the convention to elect new leadership will take place within thirty days.

They urged the political parties to cease dealing with Joseph Malek as interim chairman of the USAP party.

Besides, Mr. Simon empathized that USAP remains in the National Agenda and in strong relations with the ruling party, the SPLM.

But when contacted by No. 1 Citizen Newspaper, the alleged ousted USAP party leader, Mr. Joseph Malek Arop, who is also the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, declined to comment on the matter.
