President Kiir, UN chief discuss election preparations

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom, on Wednesday discussed preparations for 2026 general elections.

The discussion at the Presidential Palace, put much emphasis on the importance of peaceful and democratic processes in the nation.

According to a statement from the President’s office, the discussions devolved around the mergers of the ongoing Tumaini Peace Initiative aimed at achieving tranquillity in South Sudan.

Mr. Haysom reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s journey towards lasting peace and democratic governance.

The meeting comes just days after the commemoration of UN Day on October 24, during which calls for sustained support for peace in South Sudan were reiterated.

Speaking during the event at the University of Juba, Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramanian, the UNMISS Force Commander, underscored the UN’s ongoing efforts to promote stability in the country.

While their some developments which are in the positive direction, Subramanian said, the South Sudanese people are yet to experience the full fruits of peace and development.

This he said will be addressed through concerted efforts, collaborations and partnerships with the government to restore lasting peace, security and sustainable development.

The official highlighted the UN’s enduring commitment to the South Sudanese people through its consistent support of the ongoing peace process, asserting the need for durable political solutions to achieve tranquility in the country.
