Upper Nile State governor, James Odhok on Friday, commissioned the reopening of the dormant Hai Mataar Police Station in Malakal town to restore law and order in the area.
The facility contains some office spaces and 2 prison cells accommodating both males and females to ensure effective and fair law enforcement.
In a statement, the reopening event marked a significant step in the state-government efforts to ensure all old police stations in Malakal that were shut down at the peak of the 2013/2016 conflicts.
The inaugurated station is believed to be a symbol of hope and progress for the local community as many had expressed concerns about insecurity in the area should they return home to resettle.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Malakal, paving the way for community stability and socioeconomic growth.
Hai Mataar Police Station was constructed by the Humanitarian and Development Consortium [HDC] with support from UNMISS and UNHCR.
Last month, governor Odhok toured the same residential area to assess the conditions of over 130 houses built by the same partner organizations as support to vulnerable people living in the area.
