A high-level peace committee established by the Jonglei state governor has successfully concluded a series of peace dialogues aimed at resolving a deadly conflict between the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities in Nyirol County.
The conflict, which resulted in nine fatalities and 24 injuries, has sparked tensions in the region, but recent efforts have paved the way for reconciliation and mutual commitments to peace.
State officials, dispatched to Lankien on November 5, engaged in dialogue with both communities, starting at the site where the conflict began.
Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuei reported that the peace talks began in Lankien town before moving to Tut Majhok, home to the Chie Puol community, and then to the Dumien community.
These meetings were aimed at addressing the root causes of the violence and ensuring both sides agreed to cease hostilities.
“We started the meeting in town because this is where the incident began. We reconciled [the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities] and then proceeded to Tut Majhok where the Chie Puol community was based, and we held a peaceful meeting. The next day, we went to the Dumien community and did the same,” said Commissioner Bol. “On Monday, we brought both communities together to resolve all issues. They have agreed that there will be no further fighting or revenge killings.”
As part of the resolution, the communities have agreed to blood compensation and have identified key suspects involved in the violence.
The agreement marks a significant step towards lasting peace in the region, which has been plagued by sporadic outbreaks of violence.
Commissioner Makuei commended the Chie Puol and Chie Dumien communities for their commitment to peace and urged the state government to enhance local law enforcement capacities.
“I urge the state government to provide proper facilities for detaining suspects within the county to ensure justice is served,” Makuei said.
The high-level peace committee is scheduled to return to the Jonglei state capital where it will brief the state government on the outcomes of the peace mission.
