Over 120 beneficiaries of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Aweil Town, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, received phones this week for Mobile Money transactions as part of cash transfers project.
The initiative is part of a new project that also enables local residents to engage in community activities such as road and dyke construction, with financial assistance provided afterwards.
Adut Geng Akot, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude for the phones, which will be used for mobile money transfers facilitated by Welt Hunger Hilfe, an NGO implementing the WFP project in the area.
Beneficiaries were selected from neighbourhoods including Malou-Awit and Naivasha.
“It is a great opportunity indeed as Welt Hunger Hilfe has been giving money directly but they have looked into another strategy by remitting money through phone as they have seen a lot of challenges with direct payment” said Adut
“These phones will be helping us communicate with relatives and friends for various reasons like those far away and they could help you in any conditions you’re in. Also, direct payment lets the neighbours know that you have been paid and they can beg you a lot but this phone transfer does not reveal information it is secretive” she continued.
Adut encouraged her peers to learn how to withdraw money using MTN MoMo, highlighting its safety and convenience.
Mr. Benson Lual Awach, Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) for Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, praised the new payment system initiated by Welt Hunger Hilfe.
He endorsed the approach as a safer and more efficient method of remittance.
Awach urged the public to cooperate with aid agencies, acknowledging their vital role in alleviating the challenges faced by communities, including flooding, economic difficulties, and health issues.
