Woman detained over daughter’s suicide

By Hou Akot Hou

Local authorities in Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are currently holding a woman after her daughter committed suicide.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a domestic dispute over food rations.

According to Deputy Police Director Marial Awou, the young woman, whose name has not been released, became furious after her mother, a 65-year-old, took a ration card for food distribution without her knowledge.

The mother allegedly lost a portion of the food during the distribution process.

“The mother is being incarcerated for investigation as her daughter took her own life after they quarreled over food ration from the WFP,” said Awou.

“She lost some portion of about 3 malowas and that angered her daughter and she sneaked into the nearby shrub or bush and killed herself,” he added.

The police director urged the public to avoid resorting to such desperate acts and to seek help from community members or authorities when facing challenges.

Local residents attribute the increasing number of suicides in the area to the severe economic hardships faced by many families.

The scarcity of resources and the constant struggle for survival have pushed some individuals to the brink, leading to tragic consequences.
