United Nations has called on parties to the 2018 peace agreement to expedite implementation of security reforms, particularly deployment of the second phase of the Unified Forces.
Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative for South Sudan, emphasized the critical importance of a strong and unified security force in maintaining peace and security, especially ahead of elections.
He urged the parties to address outstanding issues and finalize the transition security arrangements to prevent potential security threats and build public trust in the security sector.
The UN official commended the recent National Security Sector Reform Conference, where key security documents were reviewed and validated.
However, he stressed the need for swift consolidation and approval of these documents by the relevant authorities.
Haysom highlighted the challenges faced by civilians in areas like Abiemnom and Tambura, where UN peacekeepers have been forced to protect civilians due to security concerns.
He urged the government to prioritize the safety and security of civilians, especially during the electoral period.
He added that by accelerating the implementation of security reforms, South Sudan can create a more stable and secure environment, paving the way for free and fair elections.
