Anyuak community in Akobo County, Jonglei State, is mourning the loss of Chief Omot Okwier, widely known as Chief Atii, who passed away on Sunday evening at a hospital in Ethiopia’s Gambella region.
John Okei Okei, a representative of Akobo County in the Jonglei State Legislative Assembly, confirmed the news to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper yesterday, highlighting the significant impact of Atii’s death on the community and the nation.
“Chief Atii was hospitalized after experiencing severe respiratory issues and was transferred to Gambella Regional Hospital the day prior to his passing,” Okei stated. “However, the chief succumbed to his illness around 7 PM on Sunday.”
The lawmaker described the event as a profound loss for the Anyuak people and South Sudan as a whole.
A respected leader and liberation war veteran, Chief Atii held various roles, including director of the Boma National Park and in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).
His military service began in the 1970s with the Anyanya-II and later the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), during which he fought for the liberation of South Sudan.
The community is left to grapple with the void created by Chief Atii’s untimely passing, as they reflect on his contributions and leadership.
