Gov’t restricts Facebook, TikTok

By Staff writer

National Communication Authority has ordered a nationwide ban on social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, for up to 90 days.

In a directive, on January 22, 2025, NCA instructs Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to restrict access from midnight.

This drastic measure follows the widespread circulation of graphic content depicting violent attacks on South Sudanese refugees in Wad Madani, Al Gezira, Sudan.

The government contends that these images have caused significant public distress and pose a threat to national security and the mental well-being of its citizens.

The NCA stated that the ban aims to curb the dissemination of harmful content that violates national laws and disrupts public order.

While the ban is initially set for a maximum of 90 days, the authority has indicated that restrictions could be lifted earlier if the situation is deemed to be under control.

In response, MTN South Sudan issued a circular notifying users that it will fully comply with the order.

“MTN South Sudan wishes to inform its esteemed customers that following a directive received by The Telecom Industry, access and usage, direct or otherwise of Facebook Application, Facebook Web, TikTok Application and TikTok Web and their related messaging applications have been suspended for a maximum period of 90 days,” the statement read in part.

“As a result, MTN South Sudan customers will not be able to access the aforementioned, services via the MTN network,” the Telecom Operator added.

Also, Zain issued a statement notifying users that “Zain wishes to inform its esteemed customers that, following a directive received by the telecom industry, access and usage, direct or otherwise of Facebook Application, Facebook Web, TikTok Application and TikTok Web and their related messaging applications have been suspended for a maximum period of 90 days,” it stated.
