CEPO cautions against further transition extension

By Kei Emmanuel

Community Empowerment Progress Organization (CEPO), has urged South Sudan’s leadership to avoid a further extension of the transitional period.

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO called for swift implementation of outstanding tasks outlined in the 2018 peace agreement.

With the February 22nd deadline for forming the new government of national unity approaching, Yakani expressed concern over the slow pace of progress on key milestones.

He emphasized that failure to create the necessary conditions for free and fair elections by October 22nd, 2025, would render the December 2026 election date unfeasible.

“Our government cannot continue to rely on extensions,” Yakani stated. “If they fail to meet deadlines, an interim government must be established. This time, we need to see elections as the mechanism for a peaceful transfer of power.”

He called on leaders to abandon the culture of delays and engage in meaningful political dialogue to address the remaining tasks outlined in the peace agreement.

“The only viable path forward is through the conduct of free and fair elections,” Yakani concluded. “Urgent political decisions are needed to create the necessary conditions for a peaceful and successful electoral process.”
