Aweil West Commissioner pledges to rebuild damaged roads

By Hou Akot Hou

Commissioner of Aweil West County, who was appointed in December of last year, has begun touring the county’s Payams to familiarize herself with the challenges facing local residents.

During her visits, Abuol Akok observed that many roads in remote areas have been severely damaged due to flooding that affected most parts of the state last year.

Abuol noted that the poor condition of the roads has caused significant disconnection among the local population, making it difficult for them to access essential services, particularly healthcare.

One of the worst-hit areas is Ayat Payam in Cuel-kou, which borders Raja. The damaged roads have severely hindered the movement of people and the transportation of goods between the two regions.

“One of the issues I heard from the people during my tour with the county staff is that the Payams are cut off when it rains,” Ms. Akok stated. “I want to make a clear promise that the road to Ayat and Cuel-kou will be reconstructed soon.”

This reconstruction project, however, may displace some residents as road crews begin their work.
Ms. Akok urged those affected to cooperate with the necessary changes, emphasizing that this is a crucial step toward improving the county’s infrastructure.

Additionally, the commissioner mentioned plans to complete the county’s wall fence, stating that she has already acquired the bricks and will ensure the final touches are completed.

Ms. Abuol Akok was appointed as commissioner of Aweil West under the SPLM-IO.
