Adhere to conflict-sensitive reporting-UJOSS urges

By William Madouk

Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has called for adherence to conflict-sensitive reporting in news coverage.

UJOSS’ Secretary-General Majak Daniel Kuany issued a statement expressing concern over increasing criticism directed at journalists and media outlets regarding coverage of conflicts.

Kuany acknowledged that constructive criticism is valuable, but emphasized that it is important for journalists and media houses to adhere to the principles of “do no harm” and impartiality in their reporting.

“The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) is deeply concerned by the rising of criticism of journalists and media houses covering conflict-related issues,” he stated.

“UJOSS urges journalists and media houses to practice conflict-sensitive reporting when covering disagreement or conflict-related issues, UJOSS boss added.

He cautioned that attacks on journalists and media outlets for informing the public undermine press freedom and hinder inclusive dialogue.

“Journalists play a critical role in delivering accurate, balanced, and impartial information during crises,” Kuany explained.

“Rigorous fact-checking and fair representation are essential to building the credibility of both journalists and their media outlets,” he continued.

UJOSS encouraged members of the public with grievances to follow proper channels, such as formally meeting with media outlet management or, if necessary, filing a complaint with the Media Authority.

Kuany highlighted that press freedom is protected under Article 24 of the Transitional Constitution, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), all of which emphasize the need for responsible journalism.

“UJOSS calls on the public to raise concerns through lawful channels instead of hostile campaigns,” he warned
He also called on citizens to ensure the protection of media professionals, in accordance with national and international legal frameworks.

The Union of Journalists reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and supporting responsible reporting in South Sudan.

This statement comes after Netizens criticized some media houses for bias in their reporting of the recent attack on herders in Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State.
