Officials from Twic County in South Sudan’s Warrap State have confirmed the recovery of 215 heads of cattle that were part of a cattle raid carried out last week by suspects from Mayom County in Unity State.
On Wednesday, the acting commissioner of Twic County stated that this recovery was made possible through coordinated efforts with their counterparts in Mayom County.
Mr. John Mabior noted that they alerted the authorities in Mayom about the cattle theft, and they responded promptly, demonstrating a friendly gesture of neighborliness.
“We commend the wise leadership displayed by the authorities in Mayom County. They successfully tracked down the culprits—youth who fled with the cattle that were driven away from the grasslands known locally as Toich. The cattle were then retrieved and handed over to the SSPDF forces present in the area, who later contacted us,” Mabior explained.
He also mentioned that the fierce conflict that ensued last week resulted in three reported deaths and six injuries, a consequence of the troubling behavior exhibited by some youth in the State.
Commissioner Mabior urged young people to promote peace and coexistence with their neighbors, advocating for a spirit of friendliness.
He emphasized that fighting over resources and seeking revenge only derails peace efforts and fosters animosity, which he believes is detrimental to the community.
In a related incident, the commissioner reported that nine people were killed last weekend in a similar cattle raid in Gogrial East County.
Reports indicate that the suspects took cattle from the county and were headed toward Mayom. This allegation is still subject to verification.
