Ministry of Finance and MTN South Sudan have discussed plans to enhance financial inclusion in by digitizing salary payments for civil servants and improving tax collection through the mobile money platform, Momo.
During a meeting between Finance Minister, Dr. Marial Dongrin and Mr. Francis Matseketsa, MTN Fintech Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the two discussed how best MTN can bridge the financial gap in the country.
Mr. Matseketsa emphasized the importance of the private sector, particularly MTN Fintech, in advancing the financial inclusion agenda in the country.
“We discuss the importance of the private sector as MTN Fintech to drive financial inclusion agenda in this country to digitize payment in South Sudan,” said Matseketsa.
MTN, a leading telecommunications company, expressed its commitment to promoting financial access, reaching unbanked communities, raising awareness, and developing infrastructure for merchants and agents.
“The Minister was very supportive of our efforts to enhance financial inclusion for the masses and strengthen the infrastructure for merchants and agents across the country,” Mr. Matseketsa added.
He also mentioned that MTN Fintech will assist the government in collecting tax revenues using the Momo platform, in compliance with South Sudan’s national tax laws.
“Momo will be instrumental in ensuring that collections are made at the source,” he noted.
In addition, the discussion included the topic of betting companies.
Mr. Matseketsa explained that the Ministry is currently processing licenses to ensure betting companies operate legally.
They plan to integrate with betting companies to assist the government in collecting taxes from betting transactions.
