Jonglei governor takes oath, vows to promote peace

President Salva Kiir Mayardit  urged the new governor of Jonglei, Dr. Riek Gai Kok to address critical issues in the state.

The president made the call during swearing- in of the new governor, on Monday.

According to a statement extended to the media, President Salva Kiir vowed to support the government while serving the people in the state.

“President Kiir urged Governor Riek Gai to address the pressing issues in Jonglei State and pledged full support from his administration to tackle the ongoing instability in the region” the statement partly read.

“Officials encouraged Governor Gai to intensify efforts to ensure peace, stability, and unity in this volatile area” the statement read.

On his part Dr. Riek Gai vowed to cooperate with the National government, state government as well as communities in addressing the challenges.

He called on communities to cooperate and remain united while focusing on peace and development.

Dr. Riek Gai Kok emphasised his committed to collaborating with all segments of society in Jonglei to confront the numerous challenges facing the state.

He emphasized that a strong state government came as a result unity hard work of the people.

The governor appreciated President Salva Kiir for giving him a chance to serve adding that he will try his best to deliver service to the people of Jonglei state.

Dr Riek Gai Kok replaces Mahjoub Biel Turuk of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) as part of a 2023 political deal between President Kiir and SSOA leaders.

Under the agreement, the SPLM was to assume the governorship, while the SSOA would take the deputy governorship and either a special envoy or ministerial position at the national level. However, the implementation of the deal was delayed for nearly two years until Kiir’s recent move.

Jonglei State, one of South Sudan’s most volatile regions, has long struggled with intercommunal violence, cattle raiding, and political tensions.

The new leadership faces the daunting task of addressing these issues while promoting economic development and social cohesion.
