An activist has condemned a violent attack by youth reportedly from Mayom County on Abiemnom County in Ruweng Administrative Area, calling for urgent intervention.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, April 2, 2025, is said to have forced the entire community to flee.
According to media reports, the youth launched a merciless raid, overwhelming the county and seizing control of both the town and its administrative center.
The Commissioner expressed deep concern for the safety of the displaced population and the destruction of vital infrastructure.
Activist Ter Manyang Gatwech, Executive Director of Centre for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) in a statement said the attack undermined peace efforts in Unity State and the Ruweng Administrative Area.
“I urge the governor of Unity State to hold those responsible for these illegal actions responsible,” he said.
Gatwech also referenced a recent peace conference between Unity State and the Rweng Administrative Area, where resolutions were adopted to promote peace and reconciliation.
He expressed frustration that these agreements seem to have been disregarded.
“I recall the peace conference held between Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area, where resolutions were generated to promote peace and reconciliation among the people. Those resolutions should be actively utilized,” he stated.
He continues to reaffirm that the safety of the people is always a priority. It is like law enforcement to bridge the gap that can lead to violence, all in the name of protecting their community and serving justice.
He emphasized that as a nation that has long embraced diversity, no room for dreadful actions could tarnish the long-awaited “peaceful and respectful way of life” that they have guarded jealously over the years.
He also called for a review of existing laws, suggesting they may have been neglected.
He further stressed the importance of preserving South Sudan’s diverse and peaceful society, warning against actions that threaten the hard-won peace.
“We will not tolerate actions that threaten the peaceful and respectful way of life we have nurtured over generations,” he stated.
Gatwech called on all communities to engage in peaceful dialogue and foster understanding, urging a collective commitment to peace.
