Health officials from Greater Pibor Administrative Area have confirmed the reception of 250,000 doses of cholera vaccines, which were delivered by the National Ministry of Health early this week.
In recent months, authorities in Pibor have reported a significant outbreak of cholera in the area, resulting in many lives lost.
Speaking to this publication, Achon John, the Minister for Health in the Pibor Administrative Area, announced that preparations are underway to launch a cholera vaccination campaign across the region next week.
“We are now preparing to launch the cholera vaccination campaign in the coming week. The delivery was made by the WHO, although the vaccines will not be enough, and we will still request more,” said Achon.
He indicated that the vaccine is aimed at individuals aged one and above.
The Minister also mentioned that they are engaging with the World Health Organization to reach the most remote villages in Pibor with the vaccines.
“Cholera has been spreading in the villages, but we will try to reach those areas with the vaccine this time. The vaccine aims to cover about 230,000 people in the region,” he added.
According to the Minister of Health, cholera-related deaths have relatively decreased in recent weeks compared to last month.
Earlier in the month, health authorities in Pibor made an urgent call for cholera vaccines due to the outbreak.
