Health authorities in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State are warning of a potential measles outbreak, citing clear evidence with nine cases already recorded.
The health ministry’s focal person, Luka Lual Aleu, informed this publication that these nine recent cases indicate the growing severity of the situation and the increasing risk of an outbreak.
Aleu, explained that measles is a contagious disease, and the current dry season, combined with the intense heat of the scorching sun, is believed to contribute to a higher risk of an outbreak.
He urged parents to ensure their children are not left unattended and, more importantly, to take them for vaccination at nearby health facilities.
“This disease is deadly,” stated Mr. Aleu. “Vaccination significantly helps reduce complications such as body rashes, red eyes, and high fever. Therefore, please inquire about where to obtain these vaccines.”
The health official further stated that they are working closely with partners to assess the extent of the disease and prepare for a potential large-scale vaccination campaign should an outbreak be confirmed.
Measles is an acute and highly contagious childhood illness caused by the measles virus. Its symptoms include a spreading red skin rash, fever, runny nose, cough, and watery eyes.
Unfortunately, some people still hold traditional beliefs, such as smearing themselves with mud when someone contracts the disease, believing that measles has no cure.
