Authorities in Turalei payam, Twic county of Warrap state, have detained eleven suspects for stoning a congregation at SDA church.

The suspects were accused of instigating altercations against Seventh Day Adventist church congregation, on Saturday.

On Saturday Morning at Pandit Amuol boma, SDA congregation was stormed by angry members of the community who early on warned the pastor not set up a church in the area.

Speaking to this outlet on Tuesday, Executive director of Twic county, Nathaniel Nhial Deng said the community members who are furious, attacked the worshippers, leaving several people wounded. Some were stoned and others beaten up with sticks.

Nhail said as part of the efforts to contain the brawl, forces were sent to ease tension which resulted in detention of 11 people, who are under investigation.

“We have apprehended 11 people and these people are the ones who plotted against the worshippers. They say that the church is not needed in the area, and when we ask them why they took law into their hands they never give justification, so they are being detained as investigations are ongoing” said Nhial

Nhail said the land was allotted to the Church since November 2024, and this raises eyebrows on what made the community to get enraged at the worshippers.

Some of Turalei residents speculate fears of bad practices like prostitution in the church, an allegation that the worshippers refuted.
