Yei calm despite abduction of paramount chief

Security situation in Yei remains calm, despite ongoing road ambushes and abductions by armed groups, the military has said.

Recently a paramount chief was abducted by unknown gunmen, a move that caused fear and panic in the area.

Speaking during the 14th Independence Anniversary celebration in Yei, Brigadier General Joseph Garang said the area is generally peaceful, although there are challenges affecting movement of civilians and humanitarian workers.

“The security situation in the county is calm. Only road ambushes and abductions are affecting the movement of civilians and humanitarian workers, but we are working hard to ensure total peace in the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ale Satimon, Secretary of South Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), commended the security forces in Yei for maintaining order and working closely with the civil population.

He also paid tribute to the SPLA soldiers, chiefs, and women who contributed to the liberation struggle. He recalled how women supported the movement using grinding stones for maize and cassava flour.

In a related development, Yei River County Commissioner, Emmanuel Taban Seme appreciated citizens who turned up to mark the country’s independence.

He emphasized the importance of unity and urged communities to continue working for peace while the government focuses on improving social services and development.
