The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has commended South Sudan, Djibouti, and Ethiopia for ratifying the new IGAD Treaty.
On Tuesday, last week South Sudan’s Parliament ratified the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Treaty that established the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development on regional cooperation.
IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu praised the three countries for their swift action in ratifying the treaty, which aims to enhance regional cooperation and unity.
He urged the remaining IGAD Member States to follow suit.
“I want to commend South Sudan and other members for their decisive action in ratifying the new IGAD Treaty,” Dr. Gebeyehu said in a statement.
“I want to encourage all Member States to follow this positive example because by doing so, we will further solidify our collective efforts towards peace, stability, and development in the region.”
The treaty mandates each member state to enact legislation for its effective implementation. Its ratification is crucial for expanding and diversifying areas of common interest within the IGAD region and strengthening its engagement with the international community.
Dr. Gebeyehu assured IGAD’s commitment to supporting member states that have not yet ratified the treaty.
He emphasized the importance of the treaty as a foundational agreement for regional cooperation.
The treaty was adopted by Heads of State and Government during the 14th ordinary session of the IGAD summit held in Djibouti on 12 June 2023.
It Expands and diversifies areas of cooperation among member states and with the international community.
