Inter-communal clashes leave 45 dead in Warrap

By Hou Akot Hou

Inter-communal violence in Tonj East County, Warrap State, has resulted in the deaths of allegedly over 45 people over the weekend, according to local authorities.

The clashes occurred between the Thiik and Luany-juang communities and were reportedly triggered by revenge killings involving armed youth.

Authorities stated that the violence began when armed youth from Akok village attempted to raid cattle, leading to a deadly confrontation.

Deng Madut Akuei, the police inspector for Tonj East County, confirmed that both young and elderly individuals were killed during the confrontation.

“The armed youth from the Luany-jang section attacked the people of the Thiik community in Akok village and the incident carried on from Saturday to Sunday. On the same day, they killed men in the cattle from 13 to 14 September on Sunday. Many people passed on about 45 people” said Madut.

Injured individuals were transported to Marial-Lou Hospital, where many are receiving treatment for serious wounds.

Madut urged community members to respect the rule of law.

Security forces have been deployed to the area, and authorities report that calm has been restored, despite the tragic events.

Tonj East and other areas in Warrap have experienced conflicts, often linked to politicians who allegedly arm their supporters to protect livestock from cattle raiders.

These tensions are exacerbated by competition over resources, such as grazing lands, particularly with neighbouring communities in Lakes and Unity States.
