Floods destroy major roads in Aweil East

Residents of Aweil East County continue to face challenges due to the deteriorating condition of the road connecting the area to Aweil Town.

The road, between Akuem and Dokul in Aweil East County, which has been severely damaged by recent flooding, is hindering the transportation of essential goods and services.

Local traders, like Deng Bul Akot, are frustrated by the ongoing situation.

“The road is still badly cut off, and those of ARC Company are still working on it with the local firms that they have contracted but it is still worse. Motorists and Rickshaws (Tricycle) riders initially ask the passengers to dismount or disembark before crossing the river which is created by flood,” narrated Bul
The impact of the road’s poor condition extends beyond transportation difficulties.

Mary Achol, a resident of Akuem, said one person died last week while trying to retrieve a shoe that fell into the water.

“So it is a situation that is deplorable as authorities need to work permanently or get a long term solution to this site is a preferable action that we need,” said Achol.

While local authorities have initiated repair efforts, some residents believe a more sustainable solution is necessary.

Critics argue that the current approach, which involves temporary fixes, is insufficient to withstand the heavy rains.

They advocate for a long-term solution that would require significant investment and expertise.

Widespread flooding has caused extensive damage to infrastructure and agricultural land, leaving residents to grapple with the economic consequences.

As the dry season approaches, the need for repairs and reconstruction becomes even more urgent.
