Residents of Pamat Payam in Aweil North County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, are living in fear after an unknown wild animal attacked a cattle owner in a camp last week.
The incident occurred while the victim, Akuei Deng, was asleep in the kraal, protected by a mosquito net. The animal reportedly bit him on the mouth and head as he lay sleeping.
Commissioner Kiir Chan Wol has expressed concerns about the situation as the identity of the beast remains unknown. He urged the community to be vigilant and to avoid moving around at night.
“People need to get home early, as the animal that attacked Akuei is still unidentified. He was found bleeding profusely after the attack, having been bitten in the ear and head,” Wol stated.
The victim managed to wake up and attempt to use his weapon against the beast, but the animal had already fled.
Wol encouraged community members, particularly young men, to assist in the ongoing search to ease the fears of their fellow residents.
He also advised the youth to refrain from attending night events due to concerns about further attacks.
Similar incidents have occurred in Aweil South recently, leaving individuals wounded, with the wild animals involved remaining unidentified. Some residents believe that large floods may have displaced these animals, bringing them closer to human habitats.
Earlier last week, reports emerged regarding two girls who were allegedly attacked by cannibals near the late Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel’s family home. One girl died from the attack, while the other is receiving care at Malualkon Hospital.
These events have heightened fears in Aweil East County, particularly following the funeral services for Dr. Bol’s father.
