United Sudan African Party (USAP) convened an Extraordinary Convention yesterday, during which three members were elected to top executive positions in accordance with the party’s constitution and regulations.
The elections mark a new dawn for the party that had suffered approximately 7-year leadership crises after the passing on of its former Chairperson, Joseph Okell.
The convention that took place at Jamus Playground showed Joseph Ojuku Ikarak elected as the Chairperson, John Deng Obany, Deputy Chairperson and Malong Chan Deng as the Secretary-General respectively.
All the new leaders who were active members of the party – underscored the challenges encountered as a result of the absence of legitimate leadership.
They pledged to reorganize and move the party in the right direction to serve the people.
In his remarks, the new leader, Joseph Ojuku Ikarak promised not to let down USAP, saying he’s not after power but rather serving the people.
“I will not let you down. I’m not after power, I’m after serving the people and bring up power for the youth,” said Joseph Ojuku Ikarak.
On the issue of lack of women representation among the top 3 elected leaders, Ikarak said his leadership will go beyond the 35% women representation in the forthcoming nominations.
Deputy Chairperson, John Deng Obany, confirmed that USAP political activities have been inactive for about 7 years, but he’s hopeful that the new leadership will revive all USAP activities across the country.
“Almost we have stayed for 7 years or more, USAP has been in existence in the political arena even in political rallies. However, USAP will once again become powerful after this election,” stated Obany.
On his part, the new Secretary-General, Malong Chan Deng urged for unity and team work, pledging his readiness to work collaboratively with the leadership.
