Soldier detained over rape

By Hou Akot Hou

An SSPDF soldier is currently being detained in Majok-Yithiou, a town on South Sudan-Sudan border, on allegation of raping a 13-year-old girl.

The incident on 26rh December, last year, occurred while the girl’s parents were away from their residence.
Mr. George Garang Bak, the Mayor of Majok-Yithiou Municipality, confirmed the incident on Friday morning.

He stated that the alleged act of the soldier, whose identity remains undisclosed, has caused significant anger within the community.

“What happened is that an SSPDF soldier raped 13 year old girl and this stage we never want to name names in order to help calm the situation. It angered many people as officers who are posted to this far end of the border are acting unprofessionally,” said Garang.

Mayor Bak urged the girl’s family to remain calm while the authorities investigate the matter.

He assured them that both municipal and divisional authorities are actively involved in the interrogation of the accused soldier.

He said sexual abuse is unacceptable, stating that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law. The soldier will face the full consequences of his alleged actions.

“This is something that the court will follow with him strictly and he is going to get the results of his behavior,” he warned.

The Mayor vowed to closely monitor the case to ensure justice is served and to deter similar acts by other SSPDF personnel.

The 13-year-old survivor is currently receiving medical treatment at Aweil Hospital. Court proceedings are expected to commence in the coming days.
