Eastern Equatoria State’s transitional legislative assembly members began a three-month recess on February 5, 2025.
During this time, Governor Louis Lobong Lojore directed lawmakers to engage with their constituencies and collaborate with county commissioners to tackle issues related to cattle influx, theft, and communal conflicts across the state.
Governor Lobong emphasized the importance of mobilizing local resources to support the hundreds of displaced communities in Magwi County, which has suffered due to conflicts with cattle communities from Jonglei State.
He noted that, despite delays from the national government in providing grants to civil servants, local communities should rely on their own resources to address these challenges.
The governor urged lawmakers to demonstrate resilience by promoting peace and unity among grassroots communities.
He cautioned against being swayed by self-interested politicians and stressed the importance of collective responsibility.
“Our words must be backed by action. We must lead our people toward what is beneficial for our state’s growth and peace, protecting our land and properties. Let us not trade our land for political gain,” Lobong stated.
He also called on the state legislators to unite their communities as one people of Eastern Equatoria, asserting that they cannot allow any part of their ancestral land to be compromised.
Speaker Charles Udwar acknowledged the governor’s directives, emphasizing the need for lawmakers to assist their county commissioners in addressing alarming reports of insecurity threatening the peace and livelihoods of many residents in Eastern Equatoria.
He condemned the recent violence in Magwi County, particularly the burning of homes, destruction of farms, and brutal killings.
“As an assembly, we demand urgent and decisive action from security agencies to protect our people and hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable,” Udwar added.
The Speaker also called on the national government and international partners to provide necessary support to restore peace and stability in the affected areas housing displaced communities.
