Dr. Jong Anthony, founder and former chairperson of the Action for Democratic Change (ADC) party, has announced his resignation from politics to continue a career in academia.
In a statement released to the media, Dr. Jong, a qualified veterinary doctor, stated his intention to dedicate his time to lecturing at the university level.
“Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am withdrawing from active participation in South Sudan politics, effective immediately February 07, 2025,” Dr. Jong said in the statement.
“I believe that at this stage of my career, I can best contribute to our nation by focusing my energies and efforts on my profession and academic pursuits in the veterinary field,” he added.
He expressed that his full return to teaching would double his contributing in advancing veterinary Education in the country.
“As a specialized veterinarian and a university lecturer, I am passionate about advancing animal health, contributing to veterinary education, and developing expertise that can directly benefit South Sudan’s livestock sector and public health,” he said.
Dr. Jong was the Minister of Trade and Industry in Warrap State until his dismissal by former Governor Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu in 2022.
Following his removal, Dr. Jong swiftly declared his candidacy for the gubernatorial position.
He also served in other state ministerial roles, including minister of health and environment and minister of rural development, animals, and fisheries in the now-defunct Gogrial State.
After resigning from the SPLM in Warrap State, Dr. Jong Anthony formed the Action for Democratic Change (ADC), where he became the chairperson.
The later formed Coalition of Opposition Parties (COOP), an umbrella group of various parties, continues to criticize the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) for failing to implement the peace agreement.
The COOP parties have continued to raise their voices on issues related to the well-being of the citizens.
The group in most cases declared to take part in the upcoming election in 2026 should it come to reality as promised by the parties to the peace agreement.
