PROTEST: University of Bahr el Ghazal closes

By Staff writer

University of Bahr el Ghazal has announced its indefinite closure and is sending all campus-based students home.

This decision was made by the university’s management during a meeting held on Friday, May 23, 2025, in response to an ongoing by students over tuition hike.

In a statement seen by this outlet, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kuel Mauil Jok confirmed the closure, stating that the Dean’s Board convened an emergency meeting to address the strike.

The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Admin and Finance, resulted in the resolution to close the university indefinitely and require students to vacate their accommodations.

The university stated that this temporary shutdown is intended to allow the administration to address the persistent challenges it faces.

It is currently unknown when academic activities will resume.

The University of Bahr el Ghazal has a history of closures due to strikes, frequently stemming from issues of unpaid salaries.

In October 2022, lecturers went on strike over six months of unpaid wages, leading to a suspension of classes.
