Activist urges cabinet to end silence

A Civil society organization is calling on the Executive to resume cabinet meetings, stating that prolonged non-sittings derail the fragile peace process and deepening national crises.

The appeals come as the country struggles with political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

The cabinet plays a vital role in making and implementing policy decisions, as well as coordinating government activities.

Typically, South Sudanese cabinet ministers meet regularly, especially on Fridays, to discuss important matters. However, since March, the cabinet meetings have not been happening even as the country continues to struggle with challenges.

In response to the cabinet’s silence, Ter Manyang Gatwech, Executive Director of Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) urge that the cabinet reconvene to address some of the challenges that require cabinet decision.

“We urge the leadership to prioritize the needs of the people and resume cabinet sessions without further delay,” Manyang said.

“The country is at a critical juncture, and it is imperative that our leaders come together to address issues of governance, security, and the full implementation of R-ARCSS,” he added.

He expressed concern over the prolonged delays in cabinet meetings, especially during a time when cohesive leadership and dialogue are desperately needed to address key political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

“The current silence risks derailing the peace process and further undermines public trust in the transitional government’s commitment to national unity and progress” he expressed.

Mr. Manyang reaffirmed the commitment of civil society to promote peace, dialogue, and accountability, calling on all stakeholders involved in the peace agreement to engage in constructive discussions that advance stability and development for all South Sudanese.

Adding to the call, Dr. Ghai Chol, leader of People’s United Forum and Chairman of Coalition of Opposition Parties (COOP), urged leaders to expedite dialogue and ensure the resumption of cabinet meetings.

“There is a need for an inclusive dialogue to chart the way forward”, he said

He added that the government has faced difficulties in conducting cabinet meetings since the house arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar and the subsequent disappearance of SPLM-IO leaders in March 2025.

The government is yet to respond to why there have been no cabinet meetings for nearly three months.
