Over 24 injured youth airlifted to Juba

South Sudan Red Cross has airlifted 24 injured youth from Tonj North in Warrap State as a result of a fight that claimed at least 10 lives and left 24 injured.

The cattle raid clash that unfolded on Sunday between the youth of Tonj North and those allegedly from Mayom County in Unity State.

Commissioner of Tonj North, Mr. Maweinn Akech Mawein, said Tuesday that the South Sudan Red Cross helped transport the 24 injured youth with serious wounds.

“South Sudan Red Cross has helped us transport the injured youth from Tonj North, and they are going to get treatment in Juba as they have critical wounds that can’t be treated in the county,” said Akech.

“These people were airlifted from Western Bahr El Ghazal, Wau, and they are going to receive treatment there, as they sustained very serious wounds which we can’t manage in the county,” he noted.

Mawein said that the Red Cross organization intervened by transporting the victims but would not provide further assistance in treating them.

“Some of these people have relatives and communities who will stand by their side in treating them. The organization is only helping with airlifting them; that is what we can do for them,” he stated.

Tonj North and other parts of Greater Tonj have been plagued by cattle raids and revenge killings among themselves and with neighboring areas such as Unity State and Lakes State.

Authorities have been working day in and day out to disarm them, but efforts have not been very successful.

Last week, the military issued warnings to youth to hand over their weapons or face forceful disarmament, an effort whose effectiveness remains to be seen in ensuring that peace is once again realized in a state that has been engulfed in conflict.
