Cholera kills three, 24 confirmed cases in Abyei

Cholera outbreak in Abyei Administrative Area has resulted in three deaths and 24 confirmed positive cases.

According to Abyei Ministry of Health, the deceased, all from Amiet village in Amenth-Aguok county, include two, who died last week and one yesterday.

Dr. Ayom Korchiek Ayom, Abyei health Minister provided an update during Women Drug Prevention Conference. He stated that out of 132 suspected cases of cholera, 24 have been confirmed, while 109 individuals have recovered from symptoms.

Minister Korchiek anticipates the timely arrival of cholera treatments, vaccines, and medical tools from the national Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health is strongly advising residents to adopt crucial preventive measures.

These include boiling water before consumption, ensuring proper disposal of human waste through latrines, avoiding open defecation near water sources to prevent contamination, frequent hand washing with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet, ensuring food is thoroughly cooked and consumed soon after preparation, and avoiding raw or undercooked seafood and other potentially contaminated foods.

The ministry also urged residents to construct latrines using local materials to curb the spread of cholera and other related diseases.

Community leaders are also emphasizing the importance of sanitation. Nyandeng Arop Ayuel, a local community elder in Abyei, called for increased community sanitation and hygiene efforts and appealed to the government for a sewage truck to aid in maintaining public health infrastructure.

Another community leader, Achai Deng Kuol further stressed the importance of advocating for preventive measures such as drinking clean water, consuming clean food, practicing hygiene, and vaccination.

The Abyei Ministry of Health officially declared the cholera outbreak on June 11, 2025.
