Peace monitor insists parties diminish tension

By Lodu William Odiya

Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has called on Sudan People Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) and other parties to urgently de-escalate tensions.

RJMEC also pointed at the current political and security violation to enable resumption of full implementation of the R-ARCSS.

This comes after a letter addressed to the interim chairperson of the RJMEC, which expressed concerns over the monitoring body’s meeting with the high-level Ad Hoc committee.

In a statement obtained by this publication, the RJMEC Interim chairperson, Ambassador Maj.Gen. George Aggrey Owinow reiterated his call to all the parties to the R-ARCSS to de-escalate tensions and adhere to the permanent ceasefire, embrace dialogue and resume full and inclusive implementation of the R-ARCSS.

He noted that several allegations of violation of the agreements as enumerated in a letter he received stating he would engage all the relevant parties, institutions and mechanisms to verify and recommend appropriate remedial measures as it has always been the practice.

“In this regard, the RJMEC regularly meets with all the parties, stakeholders, institution and mechanisms in the peace process, and our message and position adherence to the permanent ceasefire, dialogue and full remain the same” statement read.

According to Owinow, meeting with the committee was in furtherance of RJMEC’s mandate and its effort to seek for urgent resolution of the crisis and for expeditions, including implementation of the R-ARCSS.

The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission is constituted under Chapter VII of the R-ARCSS and is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and the mandate and tasks of the RTGoNU, including the adherence of the Parties to the agreed timelines and implementation schedule. In case of non-implementation of the mandate and tasks of the RTGoNU, or other serious deficiencies, the RJMEC shall recommend appropriate corrective action to the RTGoNU.
