South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) formed a taskforce to streamline the movement of goods and eradicate illegal roadblocks.
Simon Akuei Deng, SSRA commissioner disclosed this at joint media briefing, last week. Representatives from the Kenyan and Ugandan Associations of Transporters and Long-Distance Truck Drivers Union, were present.
Akuei said the initiative aims at resolving persistent trade bottlenecks, boost trade and regional integration, describing it as a proactive step to reinvigorate the country’s trade environment.
“This taskforce signifies our commitment to addressing the root causes of trade disruptions and implementing targeted solutions that ensure long-term improvement,” he stated.
The taskforce is to work closely with customs officials, law enforcement agencies and private sector representatives. It will also develop comprehensive strategies to address inefficiencies.
Foremost, the core mandate of the taskforce includes monitoring progress and enforcing regulations that facilitate a smoother, more transparent flow of goods.
Undersecretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Yel Luol Koor affirmed the government’s dedication to implementing the resolutions agreed upon during the regional meeting.
“Streamlining trade channels will foster economic stability and enhance livelihoods across the region,” he noted, highlighting the socio-economic knock-on effects of efficient trade.
Sudi Kauli Mwatela and Mr. Issac Katabzi, representing Kenyan and Ugandan transport community respectively welcomed the creation of the taskforce. They praised its focus on dismantling illegal roadblocks and reducing delays that have long plagued long-distance drivers.
“This initiative is a milestone in improving trade facilitation,” Mr. Katabzi said.
The taskforce is expected to usher in an era of coordinated efforts, regulatory enforcement and stakeholder collaboration. Its success will hinge on sustained commitment and cross-border support.
Traders and transporters alike are hopeful for a more efficient, secure and economically vibrant future as regional partners rally behind this initiative,
