South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) has reaffirmed its commitment to investigate the attack on the top police officer.
Maj. Gen. Dr. Stephen Warikozi, the Director of Research and Transformation at South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS), was attacked at his residence in Juba on Sunday.
The night attack on the general’s residence in Gudele 2 sparked concern among the public about the level of insecurity in the capital.
Many expressed fears about how ordinary citizens could remain safe if even high-ranking officers were vulnerable.
However, in an interview with this outlet, SSNPS spokesperson Maj. Gen. James Monday confirmed the incident, citing that the police are investigating.
“We are deeply concerned. We are running after the perpetrators. It’s just a matter of time,” Monday said.
He clarified that the investigations are carried out methodically with the aim of building a credible case and avoiding wrongful arrests.
“We are doing research and will arrest the right people. This investigation is not a one-day process. One day, one time, we will get those people, and we will be happy to inform the public,” he added.
The police spokesperson called on the public to remain calm, adding that the police are committed to reducing crime in the country.
Responding to public fears about their safety, police spokesperson called for calm and reassured citizens that authorities are actively pursuing the perpetrators.
He urged the citizens and the public to work together as a team in order to reduce crime, adding that the criminal activities affect everyone.
“Criminals do not choose their victims based on status, whether rich, poor, police, or civilian. Crime is indiscriminate,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Monday also stressed the gravity of the incident, describing Gen. Warikozi as “not just a simple major general, but a respected officer with a PhD in his field.
Police confirmed that determining a motive for the attack, which remains unclear, is a priority.
He revealed that in the meantime, deployments have been increased in key areas of the city to deter further incidents and reinforce public confidence.
As investigations continue, the police service reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting both civilians and law enforcement personnel from rising threats.
