By Lodu William Odiya

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated directive to Ruweng Area, Chief Administrator and his counterparts to intensify efforts in addressing cross-boundary security challenges.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, president Kiir issued these directives during a briefing at the State House. The Chief Administrator, Safano Wieu Malek was updating the president on the general security and development situation in Ruweng.

‎Kiir emphasized improving security would allow local communities to focus on farming activities, thereby boosting food production and reducing dependence on food imports.

The President commended the efforts of the local leadership and offered guidance on enhancing local governance structures, stressing that peace, stability, and unity among the people of Ruweng Administrative Area and its neighbours must prevail.

Meanwhile, the chief administrator is quoted reporting a notable progress in the region, while acknowledging persistent security challenges due to presence of armed militias along border.

Wieu highlighted relative calm within the area and sought President’s guidance on advancing strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening stability and fostering development.

‎Ruweng Administrative Area is an administrative region in South Sudan and was previously known as Ruweng State from October 2, 2015, until February 22, 2020, when it was restructured into an administrative area as part of a return to a 10-state system by the government.

The establishment of the Ruweng Administrative Area responded to local demands for self-rule and independence from the influence of powerful politicians in Unity State.

Recent events have highlighted tensions in the area, including unrest following attacks from neighbouring regions.
